Waterfall Rappelling

Waterfall Rappelling

Explore pristine gorges and canyons embedded in the Costa Rican rainforest as you hike, down climb, swim, jump, rappel and zipline your way through an adventure of a lifetime. Waterfall rappelling is one of Costa Rica’s ultimate adventure sports. Using a variety of techniques developed for a sport known as canyoneering, you'll hike into the rainforest where you’ll have a safety talk and practice rappel before descending a series of breathtaking cascades.

Expect to get wet and make sure to wear quick-dry clothing and water shoes like Tevas. If you plan to take a camera, call in advance to ask if the tour operator can provide a dry sack; some companies also send along a professional photographer and sell a photo CD at the end of the adventure.

North Pacific

Depart from Rincon de la Vieja on a 45-minute horseback ride to the scenic and towering Victoria Waterfall. This extreme adventure begins with a descent through the tumbling water – swing through the waterfall if you dare! After a refreshing dip in the natural pool below, test your skills and courage by climbing back up the cascade’s slippery rock wall.

Central Pacific

Manuel Antonio's exhilarating waterfall rappelling tour begins with a short drive that delivers you to the 90-foot Indian Waterfalls. You’ll rappel the cascade until you reach the waterfall’s plunge pool. Afterward, take a short walk and challenge yourself to the final “monkey drop,” a 45-foot free-fall over a deep pool – you’ll want to try it at least twice!

North Zone

A short ride from Arenal, you’ll begin the day’s adventure at the secluded “Lost Canyon” by belaying down a 15-foot tall waterfall. After a practice run, you and your fellow adventurers graduate to the first challenge, a 150-foot cascade. When ready, fall backwards and begin descending the slippery rock wall. This tour saves the best for last: the 210-foot Big Daddy, guaranteed to get your adrenaline pumping. Between the waterfalls, you'll hike, swim and down climb through a beautiful gorge carved by spring-fed streams.

Ten minutes outside Monteverde, you'll have the opportunity to rappel down a series of six cascades along hillside featuring panoramic views and lush rainforest. The first waterfall is a mere fifteen feet to help you learn the basics and practice your technique for the largest waterfall – a 130 foot plunge into a natural pool at the waterfall's base.

Central Valley

Take on Los Chorros Waterfall, a massive 180-foot cascade located in a private reserve near Grecia. The first descent is just two feet from the main waterfall, a roaring tumble of water that falls into a pool below. Afterwards, hike through beautiful forest and dine on a light, restorative snack. This adventure may also be combined with a daredevil bungee jump.
