Five species of butterflies show off their vivid colors and beautiful designs at the La Palma Butterfly Garden. A butterfly lands on you as if to say hello. The staff places bananas and fruits out for them to feast on, allowing you capture close up photos of gorgeous creatures.

The primary 828 square foot greenhouse provides enough space to walk a short loop and interact with your favorite butterfly. The secondary nearby greenhouse is used to grow host and feeding plants needed for the survival of the butterflies. In a nearby lab, witness the four different cycles from an egg to a larva to a pupa to an adult butterfly.

The friendly, light hearted and educational tour through the farm begins at 8 a.m. and takes around 2.5 hours to complete. You also have the option to finish your tour off with a cool drink and a Costa Rican typical dish from their outdoor kitchen.

Background

In 2011, several local women who make up Grupo Avancemos, started this farm after receiving government-funded business courses and butterfly sustainability training. They work seven days a week to maintain the farm and also export butterflies internationally to help supplement their business, with the help of volunteers.
