Driving into Costa Rica from Nicarauga, Orosi Volcano looms large on the left -- the most northwestern volcano in Costa Rica. The national park’s Maritza Biological Station offers access to Orosi Volcano via rustic trails. A separate trail leaving from Maritza leads to an ancient indigenous site, believed to be inhabited by the Chorotega. Here, massive stone slabs display complex petroglyphs – images and characters scratched and carved into ancient rock.

Camping is permitted at the Maritza Biological Station, and limited dorm-style lodging (reservations recommended) is also available. Always consult a park ranger before embarking on a hike, as trail conditions change often. For a beautiful, albeit distant view of towering Orosi Volcano, a panoramic lookout from Santa Rosa National Park provides the perfect photographic opportunity.
