Playa Montezuma

Playa Montezuma

Quick Facts

  • Length : The two sections of the beach total one mile
  • Good for : Sunbathing; mingling with locals; turtle nesting watching (Jul.-Sep.)
  • Surf : Fierce surf spot for advanced local surfers only

Montezuma's edgy charisma is energized in part by the white mist spouting between volcanic rock atop its walnut brown sands, and in part by the adventurists with a passion for all things nature that flock to its streets. Literally, the streets in Montezuma are notorious as some of the liveliest in the area, especially at night when brilliant fire shows fueled by wild drinking and dancing.

At high tide Playa Montezuma is cloven by crafts and knick-knacks shops, outlandish beachfront restaurants and hostels that extend to the ocean's high tide line bordering the rugged shore in the center of the beach. You'll find tourists and locals alike dipping their toes in the water and wandering aimlessly staring out at the blue-green waters. At night, the scenery takes a turn for the tipsy, when partiers shimmy out from Chico's beachfront bar, beer still in hand to prowl the streets and peruse the starlit sands, and for the nature lovers who volunteer to patrol the beach stretch to protect Olive Ridley Turtles and their eggs from poachers and predators.

As for surfing, when there's a big swell, at Montezuma's beach you'll see some surf waves (suitable for experts only) out in the ocean and extra beers (suitable for everyone) around town.
