Lazy Mon

Lazy Mon

Destination: Puerto Viejo

Things start to kick off just before sunset at the Lazy Mon as the patio cools off and Bob Marley's reggae rhythms attract the evening's customers. Pulling in people off the street isn't too difficult when you've got the best location in town. Lazy Mon's patio opens to Puerto Viejo's white sand beach and clear blue water.

As the sun treads closer to the horizon, Bob Marley fades out and the nightly talent comes on stage playing behind the backdrop of Parquecito Beach, where boats float gently in the rhythm of the Caribbean to the sounds of Puerto Viejo local's reggae, rock and calypso.

Happy hour starts at 4 p.m. and runs until 7 p.m. featuring two-for-one cocktails;  That's $6, for two of the same cocktail of your choice including popular drinks like mojitos, piña coladas (made with fresh pineapple) and cuba libres. The award for most popular in-house beverage goes to the Jamakin' Me Crazy, $6; a frozen cocktail made with mango juice, triple sec, vanilla vodka, orange liqueur and coconut cream. The runner-up (and winner for potency) goes to the Tica Rita, $6, a heady mix of tequila and guaro with fresh-squeezed sweet and sour mix on ice.

Soon enough, hours have passed and you'll want something to soak up all happy-hour madness while the night is still young. Fear not, Lazy Mon has a dependably small menu of American classics including a bacon, onion ring cheeseburger, $8, with house-cut fries as well as Buffalo wings for just $6. You'll also find tasty grilled shrimp tacos $8, with red cabbage, tomato, onion and cilantro in chipotle sauce wrapped in a flour tortilla and house-cut fries; a chicken Caesar pita wrap, $8, and the Oshi's salad,$ 8, made from mango, avocado and smoked salmon served over lettuce and thin slices of red onion with a balsamic-lime vinaigrette.

On Sundays, Lazy Mon has an open mic night that draws a large crowd of locals and visitors to watch a wide variety of acts, some hilarious, others hilariously bad, while others still are incredibly talented local and international musicians taking turns on the mic.  Other popular nights include Beer Pong Fridays from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m., Ladies' Night Thursdays (free drinks for women 10 p.m. – 12 a.m.) and DJ Saturday nights.

Ambiance

Lazy Mon's shaded patio starts only feet away from Salsa Brava beside Parquecito making it the single best spot to enjoy the afternoon with cocktail in hand. Inside, you'll find a pool table, Ping-Pong table and fooz ball table as well as a TV playing either football or soccer. Evenings usually feature live music.

Servers are friendly and laid back. If you're sitting on the patio, service can be kind of hit or miss depending on how crowded the place is.
